Introduction

Hello and welcome to this amazing and important blog about economic development in developing and third-world countries!

My name is Alena Saric and I am a fourth year student at Brock University. I am studying Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. I am very excited to be a part of the COMM2F00 course and am very excited to blog about this important topic of economic development in developing and third-world countries.

My blog will discuss various economical issues that are affecting the development of developing and third-world countries. I chose this topic for various reasons. First, I am of Bosnian (former Yugoslavia) decent and have witnessed first hand how important economic development is to my country’s future. I witnessed first hand how issues such as job creation, trade, innovation, and health & safety or lack of these factors shape the success of a country’s future, and therefore its people. This issue is significant to me as it not only affects my country as a whole, but also much of my family which still resides there. I also chose this topic for its relevance to the business environment as a whole. Living in Canada, we are exposed to many products that are imported to Canada from developing or third-world countries. Because we are in a significantly better position than many of the people that made those products, we have a social responsibility to have more awareness than what we currently have. Furthermore, because we are in this better position, we also have a social responsibility to help those that are not. I recognize that many people may disagree with this statement  and I am sure that they have reasons as to why they disagree. However, I believe in the importance of being a good global citizen, and thus strongly believe that we (citizens of developed countries) need to help others achieve the same standard of living that we are priviledged to have.
